Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005 Download the presentation (1.3mb PDF) Attention - Venue Change! (as of 8/10/2005) Learn best practices and pitfalls to avoid when developing a culturally-relevant campaign. The Hispanic media has been growing in virtually every market across the country. Many local agencies have attempted to re-define their services to meet the demand without understanding the complexities of the culture, not just language. You’ll learn more about the culture and audience to develop more effective campaigns.
Guest Speaker:
Ms. Tovar’s tenure as an advocate and leader in Hispanic issues also gave her valuable insights in the corporate responsibility arena. She heightened the visibility and public positioning of the non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the inclusion of Hispanics in corporate boardrooms. She crafted a communications strategy for the organization that garnered the attention of Jesse Jackson’s Wall Street Project, Time Warner and NBC. Her dialogue with Fortune Magazine led to expansion of the tenets of their annual ranking of Best Companies for Minorities to Work. Ms. Tovar is committed to advancing Hispanic Public Relations as a communications discipline and recently presented on this topic for the PRSA in New York, Albuquerque and Portland. She is an active member of PRSA and serves as Chair of the Diversity Committee for the Southwest district. Ms. Tovar is also a contributing author of Hispanic Marketing and Public Relations: Understanding and Targeting America’s Largest Minority available in Fall 2005.

The role of corporate communications within an organization has changed with the scandals of the past several years. During PRSA-OKC's monthly luncheon on March 16, we'll hear a first-person account of how one Oklahoma company has dealt with these changes. As manager of corporate communications for energy giant Williams, Julie Gentz, APR, was part of a team that worked simultaneously on a crisis communications plan in case the company filed Chapter 11 and a second plan for survival. Fortunately, Williams implemented the survival plan. Gentz, who has been with Williams since 1997, is responsible for providing communications support to the company's governments affairs and investor relations group, as well as other corporate issues and media relations. During her career with Williams, she has managed the company's international public relations department, led a corporate-wide public relations team assigned to the Williams World Challenge, a golf tournament sponsored in conjunction with Tiger Woods Foundation, and managed public relations for Williams' non-regulated energy business. The luncheon is $15 for PRSA members, $20 for non-PRSA members, $13 for PRSSA members and $15 for non-PRSSA members.

Within two weeks of becoming the Public Information Officer for the Supreme Court of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Judiciary, Cheryl Camp found herself writing press releases announcing the preliminary hearing and trial judge for the state trial of Terry Nichols. During the next five years, Camp split her time between Oklahoma City and McAlester adeptly handling her "normal" job duties while coordinating all trial media relations on behalf of the Supreme Court of Oklahoma. Her duties required her to work closely not only with the four judges involved at various stages of the trial, but also two district attorneys, law enforcement officials at both the federal and state level, and media outlets from around the world. Learn more about Camp's experiences as PIO for the Supreme Court of Oklahoma at PRSA-OKC's monthly meeting on Jan. 19 at OSU-OKC from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The luncheon is $15 for PRSA members, $20 for non-PRSA members, $13 for PRSSA members and $15 for non-PRSSA members.
