Cost: $22 for PRSA Members

Ask any PR professional the best way to gauge the success of a campaign or project and 99 percent of the time, the answer is going to be “measurement.” Until recently, however, the industry did not have standard measurement guidelines.

Join us November 16 as we welcome Johna Burke, Senior Vice President, Marketing & Communication at BurrellesLuce. Johna will share timely insights learned from her position on the US Work Group for the Barcelona Principles.

About the Barcelona Principles
The Barcelona Principles were formulated and agreed upon by more than 200 public relations and measurement professionals in June 2010 at the European Summit on Measurement, organized by AMEC and the Institute for Public Relations (IPR). The Principles state:

  1. Importance of Goal Setting and Measurement.

  2. Measuring the Effect on Outcomes is Preferred to Measuring Outputs.

  3. The Effect on Business Results Can and Should Be Measured Where Possible.

  4. Media Measurement Requires Quantity and Quality.

  5. AVEs are not the Value of Public Relations.

  6. Social Media Can and Should be Measured.

  7. Transparency and Replicability are Paramount to Sound Measurement.

These Principles show the PR industry is navigating away from measuring outcomes with advertising equivalencies or the value of “space and time” in news stories.  What will replace it?  How do we measure effective public relations outcomes?

About Johna Burke

During a career spanning 22 years, Johna Burke has worked both as a public relations practitioner and a provider of services that are vital to the successful performance of communications professionals. For 11 years, she was associated with U-Haul International, ultimately becoming head of public and investor relations. Ms. Burke joined BurrellesLuce in 2000, as West Coast regional vice president; in 2008 she became a corporate senior vice president and October 2009, was appointed senior vice president-marketing. She is a highly rated speaker who is often invited to talk about best practices in media relations, monitoring, measurement and PR effectiveness. Her written views have appeared in a variety of PR industry outlets and she is a regular contributor to BurrellesLuce Fresh Ideas.

March Monthly Meeting
Before the Crash - A Discussion in Managing Reputations

Every day, it seems, another person’s reputation crashes. John Edwards. Kanye West. LeBron James. It’s almost become a spectator sport.

Most crisis and reputation management sessions focus on what happens from “the moment of impact” forward. But this presentation is different. In “Before the Crash,” we ask: (1) What caused the crash? (2) Should we have seen this coming? (3) How could this have been avoided?

We’re not talking about acts of God and nature, or anything that’s caused by market conditions or external factors. We’re talking about self-inflicted wounds. In all crisis case studies, there’s a common denominator that led to the crash. That’s the premise of this presentation.

Russ Florence serves aspresident and chief operating officer at Schnake Turnbo Frank | PR. His credentials include crisis communications, reputation management, media relations and strategic planning. As president and chief operating officer, Russ provides intensive client strategy and works closely with clients on media relations training and coaching. He has a background in all the areas that make a PR practitioner successful – he ran a print publication, worked in the nonprofit world and ran the communications department for a large corporation.
