The 27th annual Oklahoma City Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) awards competition is about to begin! The goal of the 2004 Upper Case Awards competition is to recognize the best in public relations programs and practices in the Central Oklahoma region and throughout the state. First held in 1978 as the Bronze Derrick Awards, the competition’s name was changed in 1990 to the Upper Case Awards to better reflect the journalistic beginnings of the profession. Type that is set in capital letters stands apart from its surroundings. It demands attention and shouts importance. Here’s your chance to stand apart and show your talents. Your work is exceptional, dazzling, stupendous—it’s UPPER CASE!

Upper Case Awards
Reservation RSVP Reminder!:

Dear PRSA Members, Upper Case Awards Entrants, and Friends,

The excitement is mounting with just two and one-half weeks remaining before the 27th Annual Upper Case Awards Banquet and Annual Meeting! Reservations need to be in by this Friday, Oct. 15. Our deadline is rapidly approaching and your Upper Case Awards Committee needs to give an accurate attendance count to the Petroleum Club.

This year’s Upper Case Awards Banquet will honor not only the best in public relations practices in Central Oklahoma, but will also honor one of our chapter’s most respected, long-time professionals with the Paul E. Dannelley Harmony Award, the highest award given by the Oklahoma City Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. In addition, we will honor one of our relative newcomers to the field with the Outstanding Young Professional Award; and we will honor an esteemed member of Central Oklahoma’s news media with the 2004 Clarus Award.

In addition, this year’s Upper Case Awards and Annual Meeting promises to hold a surprise for all that is sure to start a new tradition!

Invitations were mailed to all Oklahoma City Chapter members and Upper Case entrants in mid-September with reservation cards and return envelopes enclosed. Please make your checks payable to OKC PRSA. If you have questions, please call me at the number below.

Proceeds from the Annual Upper Case Awards competition support the Oklahoma City Chapter PRSA, its professional development opportunities, and scholarship fund.

We are looking forward to seeing all of you at the banquet!

Pamela Gutel, APR, Past President

Entry Requirements Clarification:

This year, we are requiring that two copies of a concise summary be included in each entry notebooks. The summary is just that – a summary that concisely addresses the purpose, planning, tactics, budget and goals achieved (Categories 1-3) or the research, planning, execution and evaluation (Category 4). The summary is not in lieu of detailed narrative and back up materials. The summary page is for the convenience of the judges as they revisit entries to make their final decisions.

One of the resources we have provided to help with the preparation of entries is the downloadable entry packet and judging forms. The downloadable information includes the instructions to the judges, as well as the forms they will use to score each entry. This should be a very valuable resource as the judging forms show the exact criteria on which each entry will be judged. Narrative materials in each entry notebook should specifically address each of the objective criteria. For Categories 1, 2 and 3 the objective criteria are numbers 1 through 5 on the respective judging forms. For Category 4 the objective criteria are numbers 1 through 4 on the judging form. The concise summary page should address each of the objective criteria, just hitting the highlights and important points.
